| I went
to Melbourne for a funeral and to see my kids and grandkids, and took my
bike. A chap I met last year, Geoff Rae, had offered to show me some great
bike tracks in Melbourne, so I took him up on the offer. From his place in Fitzroy we crossed into Carlton (an old stamping ground of mine from 40 years ago) and rode north up Canning Street, a divided road, which has barriers for cars and is now local access and bikes only. At the top end (Park Street) an old rail line has been converted to shared pathway and takes us to a path along Merri Creek, Rushall, which we followed down to Dight's Falls and joined the Yarra River bike track. The scenery is magnificent so I got the mobile phone out and took these pix. We followed the track right into the city, caught a lift up to Princes Bridge, and rode north up to Little Lonsdale Street. Swanston St is closed to cars, so only trams, taxis, vans and bikes can use it. At the big intersection of Swanston and Flinders Sts (where the old rail clocks are displayed on the famous steps), thousands of people, cars and trams waited at red lights while a little green bicycle traffic light allowed Geoff and I to cycle across by ourselves. Awesome feeling! We turned right at Little Lon, back up to Nicholson Street, Fitzroy, and home. About 30km I think, a very exciting ride with fantastic views. Melbourne has hundreds of kms of bike path, going all the way up the Yarra to Templestowe, down the Bay to Frankston, and apparently from Lilydale to Warburton. We should have a holiday there and check them all out. Trains will take us anywhere or bring us back. Danny |
